About This Plant
Pyrus calleryana 'Aristocrat' (Flowering Pear), 'Aristocrat' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.
Callery / Bradford Pear , small ornamental flowering pear with white spring flowers and brilliant red-purple fall color. Long popular as a street tree.
Full sun suits this species. Plant in adaptable, well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 9. INVASIVE WATCH: Pyrus calleryana is on invasive lists in many parts of the eastern and southern US (less aggressive in PNW). Older cultivars like 'Bradford' are also prone to splitting. Newer narrow-canopy cultivars are sturdier.
For a Pacific Northwest native counterpart in scale and bloom, consider Amelanchier alnifolia (Saskatoon / Western Serviceberry) for white spring flowers and edible blue berries, or Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for show-stopping spring bracts in light shade.
