About This Plant

Amelanchier alnifolia (Serviceberry), 'Serviceberry' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.

Saskatoon / Western Serviceberry , PNW native large shrub or small tree; white spring flower clusters, edible blue-black summer berries favored by birds and people, brilliant red-orange fall color.

Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Hardy USDA Zone 2 to 8. Watch for fireblight, rust, and cedar-serviceberry rust near junipers. Generally trouble-free in PNW gardens.

This species is native to the Pacific Northwest and contributes ecologically as a wildlife host on the right site.

Care Notes

Plant in average to moist, well-drained soil. Remove suckers regularly to maintain a single-stem tree form, or allow suckering for a thicket effect. Prune lightly in late winter to shape. Watch for fire blight and rust diseases; prune infected wood well below visible symptoms and disinfect tools between cuts.
