About This Plant

Incense Cedar is a stately native conifer of the Pacific Coast ranges, growing naturally from central Oregon through California. Its aromatic, reddish-brown bark and dense, flat sprays of bright green foliage form a naturally narrow, columnar silhouette that earns its place in Oregon landscapes as a bold vertical accent. In cultivation, expect 40 to 60 feet tall and 8 to 12 feet wide at maturity, though trees on the coast often stay more compact in their early decades.

Plant in full sun to part shade in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Incense Cedar is adaptable to a range of soils but performs best when given consistent moisture during establishment. Hardy to USDA zones 5 to 8, it handles the Oregon coast's mild winters comfortably. Growth is slow and steady, so give it room to develop without crowding. No significant pruning is needed. Watch for heart rot on older specimens in persistently wet conditions.

This tree earns its keep in wildlife value: woodpeckers, nuthatches, brown creepers, and golden-crowned kinglets all use the dense foliage for foraging and winter shelter, while raptors nest in mature trees. Its aromatic wood has long been prized for cedar chests and pencils, and it carries real local pride as a true PNW native that anchors a landscape for generations.
