About This Plant
Populus tremuloides (Quaking Aspen), 'Quaking Aspen' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.
Quaking Aspen , wide-ranging N American native; brilliant gold fall color, distinctive trembling leaves on flexible flat petioles. Spreads aggressively by root suckers to form clones.
Full sun suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 1 to 6. Best in cool mountain climates; struggles in PNW lowlands. Suckers freely, site where colonies are welcome.
For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
