Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo) , Mediterranean evergreen with glossy leaves, white urn-shaped flowers and red strawberry-like fruit on the tree at the same time.
Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in well-drained, lean, slightly acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 7 to 9. Drought-tolerant once established. Avoid wet feet. Generally trouble-free.
The PNW native cousin is Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) , sculptural reddish exfoliating bark, glossy evergreen leaves, urn-shaped white flowers and orange-red fruit. A keystone southern Oregon coastal species.
