About This Plant

Acer platanoides 'Crimson King' (Norway Maple), 'Crimson King' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.

Norway Maple is a fast-growing shade tree from Europe, valued for tough adaptability; many cultivars in red-leaf, columnar, and globe forms.

Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in adaptable, well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 4 to 7. INVASIVE WATCH: A. platanoides is on invasive lists in parts of the eastern US; less aggressive in the PNW but worth noting. Watch for verticillium wilt and tar spot.

For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
