About This Plant
Prostanthera ovalifolia 'Variegata' (Mint Bush), 'Variegata', is valued for its garden character and seasonal interest in PNW landscapes.
Australian Mint Bushes (Prostanthera) are evergreens with intensely fragrant minty foliage and showy purple, pink, or white tubular flowers in spring. Bee and butterfly favorites.
Full sun to part sun suits this species. Plant in well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 9 to 11. Marginally hardy in zone 8 PNW; site in warmest, most sheltered exposure. Drought-tolerant once established.
For a Pacific Northwest native shrub of similar character, consider Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape, Oregon state flower), Philadelphus lewisii (Mock Orange), or Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray) , all support native pollinators and birds.
