About This Plant
Berberis thunbergii 'Rosy Glow' (Variegated Barberry), 'Rosy Glow', is valued for seasonal interest, structure, and the role it plays in PNW gardens.
Barberries (Berberis) are tough thorny evergreen and deciduous shrubs prized for foliage color in many cultivars (purple, gold, variegated), small yellow spring flowers, and red berries that birds enjoy. Excellent for hedging and security plantings due to dense thorns.
Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in well-drained; tolerates a range soil. Hardy USDA Zone 4 to 9. INVASIVE WATCH: Berberis thunbergii (Japanese Barberry) is on invasive lists in many parts of the eastern US; sterile cultivars like 'Crimson Pygmy' and 'Concorde' are preferred. Less aggressive in PNW but worth siting carefully. Drought-tolerant once established. Deer-resistant due to thorns. Watch for rust on susceptible species.
For a Pacific Northwest native flowering shrub of similar character, consider Philadelphus lewisii (Mock Orange, Idaho state flower) for fragrant white spring blooms, or Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray) for cascading cream-white summer panicles supporting native pollinators.
