Oakleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) is the eastern North American native , bold deeply lobed oak-shaped leaves with brilliant burgundy fall color, cone-shaped white-to-pink flower panicles in summer, and exfoliating cinnamon bark for winter interest. A four-season shrub.
Part sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, humus-rich, slightly acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 9. Blooms on OLD WOOD , minimal pruning, just after flowering. Adaptable but flowers best with afternoon shade in hot summers. Generally trouble-free.
This species is native to North America (eastern US) and contributes ecologically as a pollinator forage and nesting habitat plant on the right site.
