Japanese Laurels (Aucuba japonica) , bold-leaved evergreen for deep shade, with large glossy leaves often gold-spotted ('Variegata') and red winter berries on female plants. One of the few shrubs that thrives in dry shade.
Part shade to deep shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 7 to 10. Tolerates drought and dry shade once established. Need male and female plants for berry production. Generally trouble-free.
For a Pacific Northwest native shrub of similar character, consider Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape, Oregon state flower), Philadelphus lewisii (Mock Orange), or Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray) , all support native pollinators and birds.
