About This Plant
Strawflower has been grown in cutting gardens for over a century, and the reason is straightforward: the flowers are made of papery, straw-textured bracts that dry to nearly perfect condition right on the plant. No special treatment needed. Cut them at any stage, hang them or stand them in a dry spot, and they hold their color and form for months. 'Mojave Fire Red' produces deep, saturated red blooms with a golden-yellow center, part of the Mojave series bred for large flower size and uniform, branching plant habit.
As a garden plant, strawflower is continuous-blooming from summer through first frost, tolerant of heat and dry conditions once established, and attractive to butterflies and other pollinators. The Mojave series grows to about 16 to 20 inches tall, with an upright, branching form that suits borders, container plantings, or the cutting garden. In Oregon coast conditions, the mild temperatures and moderate summer heat extend the blooming season considerably compared to hotter inland climates.
For drying, harvest stems just as the flowers begin to open, before they fully unfurl, to get the longest-lasting dried form.
