About This Plant
Washingtonia filifera (California Palm), 'California Palm' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.
California Fan Palm , California desert oasis native; massive fan palm with thatch of persistent dead fronds. Marginally hardy in southernmost OR coastal sites.
Full sun suits this species. Plant in well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 8b to 11. Marginal in zone 9 PNW; site in warmest sheltered exposure. Drought-tolerant.
True palms are not native to the PNW; for a similarly bold evergreen specimen, consider Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) , sculptural reddish bark, glossy evergreen leaves, and a place of pride in southern Oregon's native flora.
