About This Plant

Flame is a Vitis vinifera selection, the European wine-grape species behind nearly every classic table and wine cultivar. The fruit is refined and complex, with thinner skins and tighter clusters than American grapes, and the vines reward careful pruning with excellent flavor and structure.

Grow Vitis vinifera in full sun on well-drained soil, ideally on a south or southwest aspect to maximize heat units. A permanent trellis, arbor, or wire system is essential, and these vines demand consistent annual cane or spur pruning to balance fruit and vegetative growth. Western Oregon's cooler, wetter sites can grow vinifera grapes well with disciplined canopy management; aim for an open, airy canopy and steady summer water through fruit set, then ease off as harvest approaches.

Vinifera grapes are self-fertile and wind-pollinated, so one vine will set fruit. PNW disease pressure is the real challenge: powdery mildew, downy mildew, and botrytis bunch rot all thrive in our humid summers. Plan on either a regular spray schedule (sulfur, organic options) or choose disease-resistant interspecific hybrids if you want a low-input vineyard. Birds and yellowjackets are the main harvest pests; nets or bags are standard. Vines are not strongly deer-resistant.

If you're considering native fruiting alternatives that support PNW birds and ecology, look at Vaccinium ovatum (Evergreen Huckleberry), Vaccinium parvifolium (Red Huckleberry), Rubus parviflorus (Thimbleberry), Rubus spectabilis (Salmonberry), or Amelanchier alnifolia (Saskatoon). These provide bird food, pollinator support, and Indigenous food heritage in your landscape.
