About This Plant

Ulmus americana 'Princeton' (American Elm), 'Princeton' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.

American Elm , historic vase-shaped shade tree, decimated by Dutch elm disease in the 20th century. Modern resistant cultivars (e.g. 'Princeton', 'Valley Forge', 'New Harmony') are again widely planted.

Full sun suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, adaptable soil. Hardy USDA Zone 2 to 9. PLANT ONLY DED-RESISTANT CULTIVARS. Watch for elm yellows and elm leaf beetle.

For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
