Western Hemlock , PNW native canopy conifer, the state tree of Washington. Graceful drooping leader, fine-textured foliage, dominant species in lowland and montane PNW forests.
Part shade to full shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic, humus-rich soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 8. Generally trouble-free in PNW gardens. Tolerates shade better than most conifers, site for forest-edge or shaded woodland.
This species is native to the Pacific Northwest and contributes ecologically as a wildlife host on the right site.
