About This Plant

Tsuga canadensis 'Golden Duchess' (Eastern Hemlock), 'Golden Duchess' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.

Eastern / Canadian Hemlock , graceful evergreen with soft fine-textured needles and a feathery weeping habit. Many dwarf and weeping cultivars ('Pendula', 'Cole's Prostrate', 'Sargentii').

Part shade to full shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 3 to 7. WATCHPOINT: hemlock woolly adelgid is a serious pest threatening eastern hemlocks across their native range; less of an issue in PNW gardens, but monitor. Tolerates more shade than most conifers.

For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
