Care Notes

Plant rhizomes 2-3 inches deep in fall in humus-rich, moist, well-drained, acid to neutral soil. Very slow to establish; expect 5-7 years from seed to first bloom. Do not pick the flower; removing it takes the stem and photosynthetic tissue with it and can kill the plant. Maintain even moisture in spring; plants go summer-dormant after seed set. Protect from deer, which readily browse foliage and buds.
