About This Plant

Purple Inch Plant is a fast-trailing houseplant prized for its vivid, jewel-toned foliage. Each lance-shaped leaf is striped silver and green on top with a rich purple underside, creating a shimmering two-toned effect as the trailing stems cascade from a hanging basket or shelf. Native to Mexico and Central America, Tradescantia zebrina is one of the most forgiving and decorative houseplants available, adding bold color without demanding much in return. Small three-petaled flowers of purple-pink appear occasionally but foliage is the main attraction.

Grow in bright indirect light. Some morning sun deepens the purple coloration, but direct afternoon sun can scorch the leaves. Water when the top inch of soil dries out, and use a well-draining potting mix to prevent root rot. This plant thrives in average indoor humidity and typical room temperatures. Hardy outdoors only in USDA zones 9 to 11, it is strictly a houseplant on the Oregon coast. Pinch stem tips regularly to encourage full, bushy growth and prevent the trailing stems from becoming bare at the base.

Note that the sap contains calcium oxalate crystals that cause mild dermatitis and gastrointestinal upset in pets, particularly cats and dogs. Keep out of reach of animals, or choose a high hanging basket. Propagation is effortless. Any stem cutting rooted in water or damp soil will establish quickly, making it easy to fill out a pot or share with friends.
