About This Plant
Tillandsia tectorum is the snowball of the air plant world, covered so densely in long, white trichomes that the entire plant looks frosted. These fuzzy scales are not decoration but function: in its native habitat on the dry, rocky cliffsides and roof tiles of Ecuador and Peru at high elevation, T. tectorum absorbs virtually all of its water and nutrients from mountain mists and high-humidity air, and those trichomes act as an extraordinarily efficient moisture-capturing net. The result is a plant that looks unlike any other in the Tillandsia family.
Care for tectorum differs meaningfully from most air plants. Because it's adapted to intense light and frequent rapid drying, it actually prefers very bright light, even a few hours of direct morning sun indoors, and only a light misting once or twice a week. It is especially sensitive to overwatering and poor drainage, so misting rather than soaking is the right approach.
It blooms with violet flowers on a delicate inflorescence.
