About This Plant
Tillandsia oaxacana takes its name from the Mexican state of Oaxaca, where it grows in oak and conifer forests at moderate elevations. It forms a small, compact rosette of silvery-green leaves with dense trichome coverage that gives the whole plant a soft, velvety texture. At 3 to 5 inches tall and 3 to 4 inches wide, it is a tidy, manageable size that works well on a shelf, in a terrarium, or mounted to a small piece of wood or cork bark.
The bloom display is worth the wait: oaxacana produces a bright pink bract structure from which vivid purple tubular flowers emerge. The combination of the warm pink inflorescence and the cool silver-green foliage is more nuanced than the all-out fire-red bloom of some ionantha relatives. After flowering, expect one to several pups to form at the base, eventually creating a small colony if you choose to leave them attached.
This is a beginner-friendly species with a good bloom record.
