About This Plant
Tillandsia melanocrater 'Tricolor' gets its name from the three-way color shift it performs in response to light. In lower light conditions the plant holds a bright to deep green. Give it enough bright indirect light and the base and leaves blush into deep reds and purples, creating a dramatically colored specimen that earns its space on any display. The stiff, upright leaves radiate from a central base in a style similar to Tillandsia juncea, with a slightly chunkier, more robust character.
Native to Central America and Mexico, this is a mesic air plant that appreciates regular watering, at least once a week by soaking, with careful attention to shaking any water out of the stiff leaf base before it dries. The tightly packed leaf base can hold water and rot if drainage is neglected. Good air circulation after watering is essential. This species enjoys more sun than many air plants, making it a good candidate for bright windowsills where other Tillandsia might struggle.
The color-changing behavior makes Tricolor particularly satisfying as a houseplant because you can actively influence its appearance by adjusting its light exposure. Display it in a spot where the color shift will be visible over weeks and seasons.
