About This Plant
Tillandsia magnusiana is a standout among air plants for its extraordinarily soft, silver-white foliage. Native to Mexico and Central America, it produces a ball-like mound of very fine, thread-like leaves that are so densely coated in trichomes that the whole plant appears to glow silver-white. The texture is genuinely unusual, more like fiber or fine wool than the typical firm leaf of most tillandsias. At 3 to 4 inches wide, it has a rounded, pillowy form that catches light beautifully and looks striking against dark surfaces.
Before and during bloom, the plant blushes red and pink from the center outward, then produces a thick red inflorescence with purple tubular flowers. The contrast between the silver-white exterior leaves and the flushed center is one of the more memorable bloom displays in the genus. After flowering, the plant produces pups that eventually match the parent in texture and form.
Mist it rather than soaking it, and let it dry fast in a well-ventilated spot.
