About This Plant
Tillandsia latifolia var. divaricata is one of the larger tillandsias in regular cultivation, native to Peru and nearby parts of western South America. The species name latifolia means broad-leaved, and divaricata refers to the spreading, outward-angled growth of the stiff green leaves. This variety grows on a visible stem with leaves spreading broadly outward, a form quite unlike the tight rosettes of smaller species. Plants can reach 8 to 12 inches tall, and the foliage takes on a golden-green tint with increased sun exposure.
When mature, latifolia sends up a tall, branched bloom spike carrying red flowers, making it one of the more architecturally impressive tillandsias when in bloom. The size and structure suit it to larger terrariums, statement shelf displays, or as a specimen plant on its own mount of cork bark or driftwood. The spreading leaf habit gives it a sculptural, almost primitive look that works well with natural materials.
Good air circulation is particularly important for larger tillandsias like this one.
