About This Plant
Tillandsia ionantha is the classic entry point into the world of air plants, and for good reason. This small rosette-forming species, usually two to four inches across, grows natively across Mexico and Central America clinging to trees and rocky outcrops without a drop of soil. The silver-green leaves have a fine texture from the trichomes that cover them, the same specialized structures that let the plant absorb moisture and nutrients directly from the air around it.
Care could not be simpler. Soak the plant in room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes two or three times a week, or mist it daily. After watering, always set it upside down for a few minutes to let excess water drain from the crown, then dry it in bright indirect light within four hours.
The payoff for this minimal care is a brilliant bloom display: just before flowering, the inner leaves flush bright red or pink, then a cluster of slender violet blossoms emerges.
