About This Plant
Tillandsia ionantha is one of the most popular air plants in cultivation, and for good reason. This compact species produces a tight rosette of silvery green leaves that blush vivid red or orange around the center when the plant is approaching bloom. A short-lived but vibrant purple flower emerges from the center at its peak, making the whole event a multi-week show of changing color.
Air plants require no soil and can be displayed almost anywhere: mounted on driftwood or cork bark, nestled in a glass terrarium or shell, or simply set on a shelf where they catch good light. Soak them in room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes once a week, then turn them upside down to drain before returning them to their display spot. Good air circulation after watering is important and prevents rot at the base.
After flowering, T. ionantha produces offsets called pups around the base of the mother plant. These can be left to form a clump or gently separated once they reach about a third the size of the parent. It is a charming, self-renewing little plant that asks very little and rewards careful attention with years of interest.
