About This Plant
Tillandsia harrisii 'Red' is a cultivated selection of a Guatemalan species prized for its heavy silver trichome coverage and dramatic bloom. Like other harrisii forms, the leaves are long and arching, densely coated in the pale, hair-like trichomes that allow the plant to pull moisture and nutrients directly from the air. The 'Red' designation points to deeper, warmer tones visible in the trichomes or emerging coloration, giving the plant a silver-bronze quality that reads differently from the cooler 'Black' or 'Black Enhanced' selections.
The true reward comes when the plant matures and sends up its bloom spike. Harrisii produces some of the most striking flowers in the genus: tubular red and purple blooms rising above the silver foliage in a combination that looks almost architectural. Mature plants typically grow 6 to 8 inches tall, with graceful downward-curving leaves that suit suspended or mounted displays best.
As a xeric species, harrisii does best with regular misting rather than full soaking.
