About This Plant
Tillandsia harrisii is one of the most visually striking air plants available, native to Guatemala where it clings to dry forest trees at mid-elevation. Its long, arching leaves are densely coated in silver-white trichomes, the specialized scales all tillandsias use to absorb water and nutrients from the air. The result is a plant that looks sculpted from pale felt, with a soft, almost luminous quality. The 'Black Enhanced' designation refers to a cultivated selection with deeper, more saturated coloration in the trichomes and foliage, giving it a darker silver-grey base tone compared to the standard form.
The payoff for patient growers comes at bloom time, when harrisii sends up a tall spike carrying vivid red and purple flowers. The contrast between the pale silver foliage and the saturated bloom color is genuinely dramatic. Plants reach 6 to 8 inches tall at maturity and have a graceful, slightly pendant shape that shows well suspended from a wire or mounted on cork bark.
As a xeric species adapted to drier conditions, harrisii prefers misting over soaking and should dry quickly after watering.
