About This Plant
Tillandsia caput-medusae takes its name from the Greek myth, and the comparison is apt. The thick, silvery leaves twist and curl outward from a bulbous base in a tentacle-like pattern that gives this air plant a sculptural, almost otherworldly look. It is one of the larger and more dramatic Tillandsia species commonly available, and it makes a strong visual statement whether mounted, displayed in a glass globe, or set on a piece of driftwood.
Care follows the same principles as other air plants. Soak the plant in room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes once a week, then shake off the excess moisture and allow it to dry fully within four hours before returning it to its display spot. The bulbous base is prone to rot if water collects there, so always let it drain with the base tilted downward after soaking. Bright, indirect light suits it best.
T. caput-medusae blooms once, producing a red or orange bract spike and small purple flowers, a spectacular event that signals the plant is nearing the end of its cycle. After blooming it produces pups that can be separated and grown on, continuing the plant for years. Between its unusual form and the drama of its blooming season, this is one of the more memorable air plants you can grow.
