About This Plant
Tillandsia andreana is a standout species among air plants, producing dozens of fine, needle-like leaves that radiate outward in a near-perfect globe shape. The overall effect is something like a soft, silvery sea urchin, typically spanning three to four inches across at maturity. Native to the dry rocky cliffs and canyon walls of Colombia, it's adapted to bright light and free-draining conditions with strong air movement.
It's one of the quicker-blooming Tillandsia species. When it flowers, the plant blushes orange-red and produces vivid scarlet tubular blooms that look spectacular against the silver foliage. Like all air plants it requires no soil, absorbing water and light nutrients through its leaves. Mist it thoroughly two to three times a week or give it a brief dunk, always allowing it to dry completely within a few hours in good air circulation.
Because of its ball-like shape and fine texture, Tillandsia andreana is a favorite for terrariums, hanging glass globes, and decorative arrangements.
