About This Plant

Tillandsia, the genus we call air plants, are bromeliads that have evolved to live without soil entirely. Their roots serve mainly as anchors, while specialized leaf scales called trichomes absorb water and nutrients directly from the air and whatever moisture lands on the leaves. This makes them genuinely unlike anything else in the plant world and opens up a completely different set of display possibilities: mount them on driftwood, nestle them into shells or glass vessels, wire them to frames, or simply set them on a shelf. No pot, no soil, no repotting.

Tillandsia come from a wide range of habitats across Central and South America, from humid rainforests to high-altitude cloud forests to semi-arid scrublands. This diversity means care needs vary somewhat by type, but the basics are consistent: bright indirect light, good air circulation, and regular water delivered by soaking or misting rather than watering cans. Most air plants do best when soaked in room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes once a week, then shaken gently and allowed to dry upside down before returning to their display.

Air plants produce flowers once in their lifetime, typically after several years of growth, and the flower colors range from white to purple to bright red depending on the species. After blooming, the mother plant slowly declines but produces offset pups that can be separated and grown on. They're non-toxic to pets and children, and their no-soil, no-mess nature makes them ideal for creative indoor displays anywhere light reaches.
