About This Plant
Tillandsia aeranthos 'Purple' is a compact, tidy air plant with stiff, pointed leaves arranged in a dense rosette. It is one of the more cold-tolerant Tillandsia species, native to Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, where it grows on trees and rocks in exposed conditions. The 'Purple' selection is grown for its deeper, richer foliage tones compared to the straight species. When flowering, it produces a brilliant inflorescence with bright pink-red bracts and vivid violet-purple flowers, a combination that makes it one of the most striking bloomers in the genus.
This is a reliable, adaptable species that handles a range of indoor conditions well. It tolerates lower humidity than many tropicals and doesn't mind the occasional missed watering, making it a good choice for those new to air plants. Soak weekly for 20 to 30 minutes, let it dry fully upside down afterward, and position it in bright indirect light. It can handle a few hours of direct morning sun without burning, which actually encourages more vibrant color and blooming.
After flowering, pups develop at the base.
