Hiba Cedar (Thujopsis) , Japanese evergreen with bold lustrous flat sprays of scale-like foliage with bright silver undersides. Refined slow-growing specimen.
Part shade to full sun suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 7. Generally trouble-free. Site sheltered from hot afternoon sun.
For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
