About This Plant

Taxus media Maureen (Yew), 'Yew', is valued for its garden character and seasonal interest in PNW landscapes.

Yews (Taxus) are slow-growing evergreens prized for dense dark foliage that takes pruning beautifully , the classic formal hedge plant. Long-lived (centuries) and tolerant of deep shade.

Full sun to full shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 4 to 7. ALL PARTS HIGHLY TOXIC if ingested , site away from livestock. Watch for root rot in poorly drained sites. Heavy deer browse pressure in some regions despite traditional reputation as deer-resistant.

For a Pacific Northwest native shrub of similar character, consider Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape, Oregon state flower), Philadelphus lewisii (Mock Orange), or Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray) , all support native pollinators and birds.
