About This Plant
Syringa × prestoniae 'James Macfarlane' (Lilac), 'James Macfarlane', is valued for seasonal interest, structure, and the role it plays in PNW gardens.
Lilacs (Syringa) are beloved cottage-garden shrubs with intensely fragrant late-spring flower panicles in lavender, purple, white, pink, or yellow. The classic common lilac (S. vulgaris) needs cold winters to bloom well; S. meyeri 'Palibin' and the Korean lilac series perform better in mild PNW climates.
Full sun suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Hardy USDA Zone 3 to 8. Full sun is essential , lilacs flower poorly in shade. Watch for powdery mildew on foliage in humid conditions and lilac borer on stressed plants. Prune just after flowering to shape; avoid late pruning which removes next year's flower buds. Mild PNW winters can reduce flowering on cold-climate cultivars.
For a Pacific Northwest native flowering shrub of similar character, consider Philadelphus lewisii (Mock Orange, Idaho state flower) for fragrant white spring blooms, or Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray) for cascading cream-white summer panicles supporting native pollinators.
