About This Plant

Cape Primrose is one of those houseplants that earns genuine devotion from its growers. 'Concord Blue' produces funnel-shaped flowers in a clear, cool blue-violet, usually with delicate darker veining in the throat that adds depth and pattern. Unlike African violets, which it resembles superficially, Streptocarpus blooms in long flushes from spring through autumn, taking only brief rests between cycles. The strap-like, deeply textured leaves radiate outward in a loose rosette, forming a compact plant that fits comfortably on any windowsill.

It grows best in bright indirect light, ideally an east or west-facing window where it gets good illumination without hot afternoon sun scorching the leaves. Water regularly during the growing season, letting the top of the soil dry slightly between waterings, and back off considerably in winter when the plant rests. Feed every two weeks during active growth with a high-potash fertilizer to encourage continued blooming.

Repot every year or two in a peat-free, well-draining mix. Cape Primrose actually prefers being slightly pot-bound, so resist the urge to size up too quickly.
