Sequoiadendron giganteum (Giant Sequoia)

Sequoiadendron giganteum (Giant Sequoia) is a Giant Sequoia cultivar, 'Giant Sequoia', valued for its sculptural form and refined evergreen texture in the landscape.

Giant Sequoia is among the most massive trees on Earth, native to a narrow band in California's Sierra Nevada. In PNW gardens it grows fast and lives long, becoming a landmark tree. Awl-shaped scale-like foliage on dense conical branchlets; mature trees develop massive fluted trunks and fibrous red bark.

Full sun suits this species best. Plant in moist, deep, well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 6 to 8. Generally trouble-free in the PNW. Site in a location where its eventual size. Easily 60 to 100 feet in cultivation, much larger in time. Will be welcomed. Avoid compacted or wet sites.

For a Pacific Northwest native conifer of similar character, consider Pseudotsuga menziesii (Douglas Fir), the iconic PNW timber tree, or Tsuga heterophylla (Western Hemlock) for shaded sites. For coastal exposure, Picea sitchensis (Sitka Spruce) thrives where salt wind defeats most evergreens.
