Sequoia sempervirens (Coast Redwood)

Sequoia sempervirens (Coast Redwood) is a Coast Redwood cultivar, 'Coast Redwood', valued for its sculptural form and refined evergreen texture in the landscape.

Coast Redwood is the world's tallest tree, native to a narrow coastal fog belt that reaches the southern Oregon coast in Curry County. In gardens here it grows fast and reaches grand stature within a lifetime. Flat needle-like foliage in two ranks along twigs; mature trees develop fluted reddish bark and a soaring conical form.

Full sun to part shade suits this species best. Plant in moist, deep, well-drained, acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 7 to 9. Generally trouble-free along the coast where summer fog supplies moisture. Inland sites will need supplemental water. Provide ample room and avoid compacted soils over the root zone.

This species is native to the Pacific Northwest and contributes ecologically as a wildlife host and structural canopy tree on the right site.
