About This Plant
Sedum morganianum, known as Donkey's Tail or Burro's Tail, is one of the most visually distinctive succulents you can grow. It produces long, pendulous stems densely packed with plump, overlapping blue-green leaves, each shaped like a small teardrop, that spiral around the stem in a braid-like pattern. Individual stems can reach two to four feet over time, and when several cascade from a hanging basket, the effect is a waterfall of silvery-green tails that commands attention in any space.
Native to southern Mexico, it thrives in the conditions you'd expect: bright light, very well-drained soil, and infrequent watering. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings and water sparingly in winter when growth slows. One important note: the leaves are delicate and drop easily when disturbed, so choose a permanent spot and resist the urge to move it frequently. Any dropped leaves can be set on dry soil to propagate new rosettes.
In summer, mature plants occasionally produce small star-shaped flowers in soft pink to red at the stem tips.
