About This Plant
Scotch moss is the golden-foliaged form of Sagina subulata, a low-growing perennial that creates a dense, fine-textured carpet of chartreuse-green color. Despite the common name, it's not a true moss at all but a flowering plant in the carnation family that produces tiny white flowers in late spring. The needle-like foliage stays bright and compact, especially in full sun, and the overall effect is of a soft, jewel-toned mat that seems to glow in the garden.
This is a go-to plant for filling in between stepping stones, softening the edges of paths, and tucking into the gaps of flagstone patios or rockeries where foot traffic is light. It tolerates being stepped on occasionally without complaint, making it more practical than true moss in areas where the path gets incidental use. It's also beautiful in rock gardens and troughs, or as a low border along a raised bed.
Scotch moss needs good drainage and consistent moisture to perform well. It can brown out if it dries completely or if it sits in standing water, so the goal is evenly moist, well-drained soil. Fertilize sparingly: too much nitrogen pushes leggy growth that defeats the compact habit that makes this plant so useful.
