About This Plant

Rosa rugosa (Beach Rose), 'Beach Rose', is valued for fragrant flowers, repeat bloom in many cultivars, and the timeless garden presence of roses.

Rugosa Rose (Rosa rugosa) is a tough Asian shrub rose , thick crinkled leaves, intensely fragrant flowers, large nutritious tomato-shaped hips, and famously tough disease-resistant character. Highly salt-tolerant for coastal plantings.

Full sun suits this species. Plant in well-drained; tolerates lean and salt soil. Hardy USDA Zone 2 to 7. INVASIVE WATCH on sandy coasts in some regions (esp. eastern N America, Europe); less aggressive in PNW gardens but worth siting carefully. Suckers freely. Generally trouble-free; resists black spot and most rose pests. Deer-resistant due to dense thorns.

For a Pacific Northwest native rose, consider Rosa nutkana (Nootka Rose), Rosa pisocarpa (Cluster Rose), or Rosa gymnocarpa (Baldhip Rose) , all native species providing pollinator forage, hips for birds, and graceful arching habit in PNW gardens.
