About This Plant
Yaku Princess is a low, spreading dwarf rhododendron with one of the most striking bloom displays of any compact variety. The buds open apple-blossom pink in mid-May and fade gracefully to near-white, creating a soft bicolor effect across large, ball-like trusses that can nearly obscure the foliage entirely at peak bloom. The mature plant stays 2 to 3 feet tall while spreading 4 to 5 feet wide, making it more of a broad mound than a compact globe.
A distinctive feature of Yaku Princess is the buff-colored indumentum on the undersides of its leaves, a fuzzy protective layer inherited from its yakushimanum parentage that helps the plant shrug off harsh weather and drying winds. This makes it particularly well-suited to exposed coastal sites where less adapted rhododendrons struggle. It is reliably hardy to minus 15 degrees Fahrenheit and tolerates more sun than many rhododendrons when moisture is consistent.
Plant Yaku Princess where its wide-spreading habit can be appreciated, such as on a slope, at the front of a mixed border, or alongside a path where the spring bloom display stops visitors in their tracks. The soft pink-to-white transition is one of the prettiest color effects in the spring garden.
