About This Plant
'Yaku Berg' is a compact rhododendron with clear yakushimanum heritage, the Japanese island species that gave the rhododendron world some of its most refined, low-growing cultivars. Plants stay tight and mounded, rarely exceeding four feet, and the foliage has that classic yak-hybrid quality: new growth emerges silver-felted in spring, maturing to glossy dark green with pale indumentum (fuzzy coating) on the undersides. In bloom, the plant carries trusses of flowers that shift from deep rosy-pink buds to lighter pink or white as they fully open.
The compact scale makes 'Yaku Berg' one of the most versatile rhododendrons for smaller Pacific Northwest gardens. It works equally well in a large container on a shaded porch, as a low hedge along a woodland path, or tucked into a mixed shrub border where its year-round foliage texture earns its keep. The silver new-growth flush alone is worth planting for.
Like all yakushimanum-type rhododendrons, this one is notably cold-hardy and tolerant of cool, overcast summers.
