About This Plant
Ramapo is one of the standout dwarf rhododendrons, earning both the RHS Award of Garden Merit and the American Rhododendron Society's Rhododendron of the Year for the Northwest region. It stays compact at around 2 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, forming a dense, tidy mound that earns its keep in smaller gardens, rock gardens, and containers. In spring the plant covers itself in small clusters of violet-purple flowers that contrast beautifully with the aromatic, blue-green foliage. The leaves open pale blue and deepen as the season progresses, taking on bronzy tones in winter.
What makes Ramapo particularly valuable for Pacific Northwest gardeners is its versatility: it tolerates more sun than most rhododendrons and can be grown in full sun where it remains more compact, or in part shade where it relaxes slightly. Cold hardiness extends to minus 25 degrees Fahrenheit, making it reliably perennial even in harsher inland gardens. Acidic, moist, well-drained soil is preferred.
Use Ramapo as a low hedge, a rock garden anchor, or a front-of-border accent where its controlled size and generous bloom make it an easy choice. It is genuinely one of the most adaptable and reliable small rhododendrons available.
