About This Plant
Rhododendron ponticum (Rhododendron), 'Rhododendron', is valued for its spring flower trusses, evergreen presence, and seasonal interest in shaded gardens.
Pontic Rhododendron , Mediterranean / Black Sea native; large evergreen shrub with lilac-purple flowers. Important ecological / invasive-watch species in the UK.
Part shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 6 to 8. Standard rhody care. Note: R. ponticum is on invasive lists in the UK and Ireland; it is generally not aggressive in the PNW but worth being aware of.
The Pacific Northwest native rhododendrons are Rhododendron macrophyllum (Pacific Rhododendron, Washington state flower) for evergreen woodland edges, and Rhododendron occidentale (Western Azalea) for fragrant deciduous spring bloom in damp sites.
