About This Plant

Rhododendron 'Percy Wiseman' is a compact yakushimanum hybrid that has won awards from both the Royal Horticultural Society and the American Rhododendron Society, and it earns that recognition every spring. The flower trusses open in a warm peach-yellow with soft pink blushing, then gradually fade through shades of cream as the season progresses, so a single plant in full bloom displays multiple tones at once. Each rounded truss holds 13 to 15 flowers, and a mature plant in bloom is genuinely showstopping.

The yakushimanum parentage shows in the compact, mounding form and in the thick leaves with their characteristic velvety tan undersides. This is not a rhododendron that sprawls out of control or needs constant pruning to stay tidy. It stays naturally compact and proportional, making it well-suited to smaller gardens, entryways, and even containers with proper care.

Like all yakushimanum hybrids, 'Percy Wiseman' is more tolerant of sun than many rhododendrons, though it still appreciates some afternoon shade in exposed sites. Acidic, humus-rich soil with good drainage is essential. On the Oregon coast, where conditions favor rhododendrons almost universally, this cultivar is an excellent choice for gardeners who want reliable, distinctive color in a well-behaved package.
