About This Plant

Western Azalea (Rhododendron occidentale) is the only deciduous native azalea of the Pacific West. A showy streambank and seep shrub of SW Oregon, the California Coast Ranges, and the Sierra Nevada. Fragrant funnel-form flowers open in late spring and early summer, white to salmon pink with a yellow-blotched upper lobe and long protruding stamens.

The sweet honeysuckle-like fragrance fills the air around a blooming Western Azalea. Bumblebees, large butterflies, and hummingbirds all work the flowers heavily. Fall color is a bright yellow to red-orange before the leaves drop.

Pomo, Kashaya peoples used the showy blooms for ceremonial arrangements.

Growing conditions: This is a streamside, seep, or wet-forest-edge native. Unlike most Rhododendrons, it tolerates seasonally saturated soil and even thrives next to running water. Part sun to dappled shade, acid well-drained humus-rich soil, steady summer moisture. Zone 6–9.

Coastal-friendly within its native SW Oregon range, but not a dune plant. Give it a sheltered woodland edge or streamside setting.

Note on deer: unlike evergreen Rhododendrons which deer generally avoid, Western Azalea is moderately palatable. Protect young plants until established.

Classic PNW shade-garden companions: Polystichum munitum, Oxalis oregana, Aquilegia formosa, Dicentra formosa, and Vaccinium parvifolium.
