About This Plant

Edith Bosley is a large, statement-making rhododendron with rich purple flowers flushed in magenta, each truss marked with distinctive purple-black spots in the throat. The blooms are held in large rounded clusters above long, glossy dark green leaves that remain on the plant for up to three years, giving this shrub a particularly lush and full appearance even out of bloom. At maturity it spreads wide and open, typically reaching 8 feet in both directions.

Often compared to Purple Splendour but with superior cold hardiness, Edith Bosley suits Pacific Northwest gardens particularly well. It performs best in part shade with morning sun, in the moist, acidic, well-drained soil that rhododendrons generally prefer. A generous layer of organic mulch around the base helps maintain the soil conditions this plant thrives in and reduces supplemental watering once established.

The deep jewel-tone flower color reads beautifully against the backdrop of a woodland garden or mixed shrub border, especially when planted near lighter-colored companions like white or pale pink azaleas. This is a variety for gardeners who want something with presence and permanence in a large-scale planting.
