About This Plant
Quercus shumardii (Shumard Oak), 'Shumard Oak' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.
Shumard Oak , heat- and drought-tolerant southern red oak with brilliant scarlet-red fall color. More urban-tolerant than pin oak; tolerates a wider pH range.
Full sun suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, adaptable soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 9. More adaptable to alkaline soils than pin oak. Generally trouble-free.
For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
