About This Plant
Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca (Rocky Mountain Douglas Fir) is a Douglas Fir cultivar, 'Rocky Mountain Douglas Fir', valued for its sculptural form and refined evergreen texture in the landscape.
Douglas Fir is the iconic conifer of the Pacific Northwest, a keystone species supporting hundreds of native birds, mammals, fungi, and insects across its range. Soft flat needles arranged spirally around twigs; distinctive cones with three-pronged bracts protruding between scales (often described as 'mouse tails').
Full sun to part shade suits this species best. Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil. Hardy USDA Zone 4 to 8. In garden settings, watch for Swiss needle cast and rhabdocline needle cast in coastal sites. Site with room. Douglas Fir is a forest-scale tree, easily 50 to 80 feet in landscape settings.
This species is native to the Pacific Northwest and contributes ecologically as a wildlife host and structural canopy tree on the right site.
