About This Plant

Prunus serrulata 'Royal Burgundy' (Japanese Flowering Cherry), 'Royal Burgundy' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.

Japanese Flowering Cherry , the iconic spring-flowering cherry with showy double pink or white blossoms. Classic cultivars include 'Kwanzan' (deep pink doubles) and 'Mt. Fuji' / 'Shirotae' (white).

Full sun suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 8. Watch for cherry borer, leaf spot, brown rot, and aphids. Short-lived (20 to 30 yr) but spectacular while they last.

For a Pacific Northwest native counterpart in scale and bloom, consider Amelanchier alnifolia (Saskatoon / Western Serviceberry) for white spring flowers and edible blue berries, or Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for show-stopping spring bracts in light shade.
